A work inspired by ‘The Phenomenology of Shame, Guilt and the Body’ (2003) essay by German psychiatrist and philosopher Dr. Thomas Fuchs on the distorted self projection in the mirror caused by body dysmorphic disorder.
By stacking the clothing rail tubes vertically instead of the typical horizontal clothing display position, Marc-Aurèle Debut breaks its functional purpose. He uses its reflective chrome effect to mirror the mind and to open a dialogue on cultural body shaming within fashion, advertising and pop culture and its effects on body and mental health.

The sculpture is composed of garment rack rail tubes the artist has collected, manipulated and assembled into a work depecting the consumer society and its negative impact on ecology and global warming.
Beneath its functional use, the clothing rack is a totem of overconsumption, designed in retail stores to subliminally push human beings towards consumption.




The NON-FUNGIBLE-JUNGLE-TOKEN is a collaborative project with Bernard Vienat and association art-werk created as a numbered edition of 999 unique and numbered coins. It is meant to accompany and enable the further tree planting as breathing sculptures along with each solo exhibition of Andreas Greiner. A buyer of NFJT receives the right to fund the planting of a forthcoming tree. Designed in a shape of a coin, NFJT is a reminiscence of the 50 Pfennig Deutsche Mark coin from 1949. Showing a woman putting a tree sapling in the ground, the coin honoured the “Kulturfrauen” who replanted forests in the Harz region and Niedersachen after they had been razed to pay off the debt owed to the British for World War II. However, instead of a woman planting a tree, the Non-Fungible-Jungle-Token shows the rover Perseverance, which landed on the Martian surface in 2020, tenderly cradling an oak sapling.




Due to anthropogenic climate change causing higher temperatures, drought and better living conditions for tree pathogens, forests are endangered worldwide. Jungle Memory seeks to archive this ephemeral life form and its specific aesthetics in a vast digital database by photographically documenting forests, like on the Island of Vilm or the Hambach Forest in Germany, the primeval Bialowieza Forest in Poland, the Red Forest in Chernobyl or the burnt down parts of the Plumas National Forest in California. While our image of nature had traditionally been expressed through landscape painting, this project reinterprets the genre for the digital age; nature is not perceived by human senses, but rather through a Deep-Learning Algorithm. Artificial Intelligence can thus be understood as extending the ‘human gaze’ on nature. The technological appropriation of the natural world creates a digital hallucination, questioning the sublime nature-experience heralded in the romantic era.

During the process of applied machine learning, the project took a self-critical turn in analysing its own electric energy consumption. Calculating the carbon dioxide emissions of projects and integrating them in their display (e.g. Change the system, Mars on Earth, 880), is an effort to begin to understand and visualize these rather abstract relationships.

This assembly of three latest pieces is part of an ongoing and comprehensive complex of work (»THE ND-Serial«) that is investigating and expanding the definition of sculptural objects in the virtual space within a range of different media types.
The fil rouge of the work is the recurrent use of a thin vertical needle that arranged in different numbers and shapes creates a monolithic unit. Depending on the perspective the formation appears as a permeable grid of lines
or as a condensed block. By the very own possibilities of the virtual space this corebody is staged in complex simulated environments. In the unsettling atmosphere and significant void of those wide scapes new perceptions of it ́s tangibilty, dimension, stability and fragility are established and expanded in the
development over time. Everchanging volumes and spaces are revealed towards gentle camera movements around replicated forms and abstract shapes find a physical presence.
Together with a heavy pulsating subbassdriven soundlayer the sum of these elements constructs a close but alienated reailty that oscillates between dystopien and utopian moments - eroding a general fascination
of the menacing and equally sublime impressions of annihilation.

 The Heldreich’s pine is considered “the ancient tree”, the oldest arboreal tree in the European continent and was discovered in Italy, more precisely in the Pollino National Park in Calabria where the photo was taken.
